Erosion Monitoring Report Feb. 2012

Erosion Monitor Report

February 2012

In December of 2008, Jack, Fran, and Frank installed eighteen white PVC stakes along various shorelines to help monitor the rate of erosion in 8 out of our 10 lakes.  Lake Egret (#6) and Lake Sandpiper (#9) did not have stakes installed.

On February 13th and 15th 2012, the Lake Committee measured the amount of space (recorded as erosion in inches) between the monitor stakes and the shoreline.  Digital photographs were also taken of these areas.  Participants were Jean, Emily, Robin, & Stacy.

Lake Constance (#1)

Stake #1 is located near the outfall to the 54th Avenue canal, alongside 648 Quintana Place.  Bulrush was planted in front of this stake (2010-2011 TBEP grant project) to help slow erosion in this corner.  There was approximately 4 inches of erosion behind the stake.

Stake #2 is located behind the property of 5230 Venice way.  There are no plantings in this area and approximately 4.5 inches of erosion is behind the stake.

Lake Cypress (#2)

Stake #3 is located along the bank of 627 Florenz Circle.  Bulrush was planted in front of this stake (2010-2011).  There is approximately 8 inches of erosion behind the stake at both the top of the stake and the bottom of the stake.  It appeared that “chunks” of soil had slid into the lake.

Stake #4 is located along the land bridge.  There are no plantings is front of this stake.  There is approximately 2.75 inches of erosion at the top of the stake and 8 inches of erosion near the bottom of the stake.  It appears that “undercutting” is occurring.

Lake Taranto (#3)

Stake #5 is located along the land bridge towards the CII neighborhood.  Bulrush was planted in front of the stake (2010-2011).  There is approximately 2.5 inches of erosion from top to bottom of the stake.

Stake #6 should have been located behind Neighborhood B homes (Moreno Circle) closest to Neighborhood A, but the stake could not be located.  There are no plantings in this area.  It should be noted that the sprinkler system (A) in this area extends onto a steep bank and 2-3 sprinkler heads are tilted outward towards the lake.  Recommend capping or moving these sprinkler heads.    The property of 521 Moreno Circle has severe erosion with a very steep slope outside its pool cage.  The property of 627 Florenz Circle also has a very steep slope outside its pool cage.  There are substantial soil depressions in several properties along this shoreline as well.   An engineering survey and bank restoration is recommended for this shoreline area.

Note – Out of 10 Neighborhood B homeowners with waterfront property on this lake, 3 have built seawalls (2002?).

Lake Messina (#4)

Stake #7 is located behind the property of 601 Segovia Court, where Milano Court meets Segovia Court, on the shoreline opposite Placido Parkway Loop.  There is 10 inches of erosion near the top of the stake and 10.5 inches near the bottom of the stake.

Stake #8 is located behind 621 Segovia Court, closer to the shallow narrow portion of Lake Messina, also opposite the Placido Parkway Loop.  There is some pickerelweed planted by this stake.  There is approximately 8 inches of erosion from the top to the bottom of the stake.   The plant is trapping some of the soil around its base.

Note:  An additional stake was installed in 2011 during the Lake Messina bank restoration project behind Palermo Court.  This stake is located behind 633 Segovia Court.  This stake was installed while the lake was drained and a curved section fell into the lake.  There is 1 inch of erosion.  Also note that bulrush was planted on the corners of the lake back in 2009 by PBCA to help slow erosion and soil is being captured between the plants and the shoreline as planned.

Lake Lucerne (#5)

Stake #9 should have been located on the shoreline opposite the PBCA office, behind the property of 700 Sand Pine Drive.  The stake could not be located.  There is an electrical box located behind the property of 661 Bay Laurel Court (?) that is very close to the shoreline.  Recommend having the box relocated.

Lake Egret (#6)

Not staked.

Note - All 7 homeowners on Lake Egret installed seawalls in 2007 and the Neighborhood E common area shoreline had a geo web bank restoration in 2007.

Lake Placido (#7)

Stake #10 is located in front of the bench along the Placido Parkway Loop between Venice Way and White Sand Circle.  There is 5.5 inches of erosion behind the stake from top to bottom.  There is currently 121 inches from the edge of the bench’s concrete base to the edge of the shoreline.  The soil in front of the bench is uneven and lower than the concrete base.

Stake #11 is located along the land bridge closest to the CII end of Lake Taranto.  There is 5 inches of erosion from top to bottom of the stake.

Stake #12 is located along the land bridge closest to the CII end of Lake Messina, behind the property of 693 Malta Court.  There is 12.5 inches of erosion near the top of the stake and 13.5 inches near the bottom.  This area has more wave action than most of the other lakes and dense planting is recommended for this shoreline area.

Note – Out of the 39 homeowners with waterfront property, 34 built seawall in 2001-2002. A seawall was also built on the PBCA common property along Placido Parkway Loop, towards Cherry Laurel Drive.

Lake Heron (#8)

Stake #13 is located behind 1090 Water Oak Court.  There is 9.5 inches of erosion at the top and 10 inches at the bottom.

Stake #14 is located close to the outfall behind the property of 1060 Water Oak Court.  There is 11.5 inches of erosion from top to bottom of the stake.

Note – out of 7 homeowners with waterfront property, 4 built seawalls in 2001-02, a seawall was also built on the PBCA common property along Cherry Laurel Drive and the Placido Parkway Loop.

Lake Sandpiper (#9)

Not staked.

Note – 12 out of 14 homeowners on this lake built seawalls in 2001-02, a seawall was also built on the PBCA common property along Cherry Laurel Drive.

Lake Flamingo (#10)

Stake #15 is located along Cherry Laurel Drive, closest to the property of 1251 Darlington Oak Circle.  There is 5 inches of erosion at the top and 2 inches at the bottom of the stake.

Stake #16 is located behind 1191 Red Maple Circle.  There is 14 inches of erosion at the top and 13 inches at the bottom.  An engineering survey and bank restoration is recommended for this area.

Stake #17 is located by the outfall behind the property of 1171 Red Maple Circle.  There is

2.5 inches of erosion at the top and 3 inches of erosion near the bottom of the stake.

Stake #18 is located by the outfall behind the property of 1239 Darlington Oak Circle.  There is 5.5 inches of erosion at the top and 6.5 inches at the bottom.

Note - 7 out of 11 homeowners built seawalls around this lake in 2001-2.

There are common areas as well as private homeowner areas that need to be addressed.

Need to double check the dates that the seawalls were built.
